Ubuntu: Problem with dual monitor config in Ubuntu 18.04

Question:

I have a really annoying problem after I made a clean installation of Ubuntu 18.04.

The Setup

I have an XPS 13 laptop connected to a 24'' monitor using a Dock (also Dell). It's connected using the ThunderBolt port.

Problem

When I turn on the laptop, the monitor works and I can see the startup information (BIOS) and the password prompt for the encrypted drive. When the login (gnome) screen is about to be displayed the monitor turns off and do not recover from that state. I have to disconnect the laptop from the dock and manually log in and then plug in the dock/monitor again.

Driver info

WARNING: you should run this program as super-user. *-display description: VGA compatible controller product: Intel Corporation vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 2 bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0 version: 02 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom configuration: driver=i915 latency=0

Any ideas on what to check or what to do?

Thanks in advance.

Solution:1

I think that the first thing to check would be the graphics driver you're using, in Activities -> Software & Updates -> Additional Drivers. More people could help you if you listed the graphics driver among the information.

Some ideas would be: 1) change driver 2) reinstall driver 3) unistall drivers, you don't use

For me, I chose to stick to open source Nouveau driver, and I uninstalled nvidia; "sudo apt-get purge nvidia*", "sudo apt-get autoremove" and restart. So that nvidia driver won't interfere in the background, and everything works for me now, but that may not be the most optional choice for you.
