Ubuntu: Dos and don'ts to avoid breaking the apt packet manager [closed]

I started using Debian three years ago and after some time I always need a fresh installation because I cannot install packages anymore because of dependency and version issues. I know that it is my fault because I add and remove repositories when I need software that is not available or outdated.

Now I am asking for general advices on how to prevent breaking the package manager again. What do I need to do to keep apt working and what are typical causes for a broken package manager? Thank you very much!
