Ubuntu: Opening chrome browser stops bluetooth devices working

Question:

Opening chrome browser after boot kills existing bluetooth connections. Here is what happens:

  1. Boot up Ubuntu 16.04 clean install with chrome browser being the only other item installed
  2. Turn on external bluetooth devices (in this case, apple magic mouse and keyboard) that have already been paired
  3. Log in
  4. Use mouse and keyboard to confirm bluetooth connectivity
  5. Open chrome browser (Chrome 54)

Results of these steps are as follows:

  • External devices no longer responsive
  • Bluetooth icon in top right hand corner still present (includes lock symbol to signify a connection)
  • Clicking on the bluetooth symbol and hovering over the device name shows it still has a connection

Below is a following the result of running ~$ rfkill list all

0: hci0: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 1: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no

This issue was persistent with bluez package installed. Next steps for investigation would be great as I'm lost on this one.
