Ubuntu: Upgrade from14.04 to 16.04 has gone wrong - I cannot boot [closed]

Question:

I have upgraded from 14.04 to 16.04 and the machine will not boot. I have tried it in advanced options mode in GRUB Menu - the latest version of the kernel I have is Linux 3.3.0-92. I have tried it in both generic and recovery mode.

The error messages I get are somethings like this

Unable to read it able block; Failed to disable gratis turbo; I/O error, Deb sad, sector nnnnnn.

How do I get out of this? I am a non-techie who has been using Ubuntu happily for 5 years.

Edit 1:

After a number of hours, it has stopped with the following error messages.

Failed to start Network Time Synchonisation, details in system to status systems-time synced.service.

and Same error message for

Load/Save RF kill switch status

Does this sound like a hardware problem?
