Ubuntu: Steam on Ubuntu 16.04

Question:

Ok, so I've recently installed Ubuntu 16.04 on my 08' Macbook Pro to give it a new lease of life and it's been a great decision, however I'm an extreme novice when it comes to coding whatsoever.

I used to be an avid gamer but haven't dabbled since having my Mac running OSx, I've just realised that steam is available on Ubuntu which was great as I used to use it all the time back in the day.

So I've gone on steampowered.com website, downloaded the 2.6MB .deb file, installed it via ubuntu software centre and terminal on two separate occasions using;

sudo dpkg -i steam_latest.deb

sudo apt-get -f install

When I search my computer Steam comes up under applications. When I run it, it appears in my launcher menu on the left hand side of my screen and then it just disappears. No error message, it just never opens.

I've done a software update but still no luck, I've asked on reddit and checked a google search but no answers. Can anyone help me?

EDIT

In response to a request running steam in terminal

I got this; Running Steam on ubuntu 16.04 64-bit STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically grep: symbol lookup error: grep: undefined symbol: pcre_jit_stack_alloc /bin/bash: /home/duncan-hamill/.steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libtinfo.so.5: no version information available (required by /bin/bash) grep: symbol lookup error: grep: undefined symbol: pcre_jit_stack_alloc grep: symbol lookup error: grep: undefined symbol: pcre_jit_stack_alloc Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1468023329) libGL error: unable to load driver: nouveau_dri.so libGL error: driver pointer missing libGL error: failed to load driver: nouveau libGL error: unable to load driver: swrast_dri.so libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast
