Ubuntu: Show Date Before Month in Top Bar Applet

Question:

I'm running 14.04 and would like to have the Time & Date applet near the far right of the upper panel show the date as dd mmm rather than mmm dd, i.e. Fri 18 Mar 01:10 instead of the current:

time & date applet

I'm located in the central U.S. (Chicago time zone) and set my locale as such during installation (language is en-US, if that matters). I'm not interested in making any other changes, I just prefer having the date before the month. Is there a way to accomplish this?
