Ubuntu: Kernel updates in apt

Question:

Running Lubuntu. I noticed that kernel updates aren't included in apt. If I do sudo apt-get upgrade, and there's a kernel update, those 3 packages will be excluded from the updates to install. In short, apt will never update the kernel. In order to update the kernel, I need to run the Software Updater utility.

Why is that so? And mainly, is there a way to change it so that kernel updates are included with all others? This is simply for convenience purposes.

Thanks in advance
