Ubuntu: Images and text distorting after playing a game, any idea how to fix?

Question:

Completely new to Ubuntu, so please feel free to assume I know how to do almost nothing.

Basically, after playing a game in Steam (I've tried this with Crypt of the Necrodancer and Faster Than Light), images and text will start distorting - ie going from https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8UFav73kzswclZUaEgzekphVDA/view?usp=sharing to https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8UFav73kzswbE9jSUxRYTJZUXM/view?usp=sharing (this distortion also occurs to the desktop background)

(Apologies for the links, no reputation to post images). The distortion also starts happening to icons, and most evilly text, although not in a browser for some reason.

I have an Intel GM4500 integrated graphics card, and Ubuntu version 14.04.2. I suspect it's something to do with graphics drivers, but not entirely sure, and graphics drivers from them for this Ubuntu version seem difficult to get. I've also tried updating to the next version of Ubuntu from within 14.04.2 using the Software Updater so I can use their installer, but then on next boot it doesn't boot into a graphical interface and the message "Pipe B underrun" keeps flashing.

Many thanks in advance for any help, it's pretty perplexing.

Update: It's now done the same without playing a game or doing anything except browsing reddit. Curses.

Solution:1

It seems to have been fixed by using a liveCD of Vivid Vervet (15.04 64-bit) found here to install 15.04.

Managed to play both FTL and Necrodancer with no adverse effect at all, compared to almost immediate distortion in Necrodancer beforehand.
